There Is By Christopher George Ketcham
there is a symbolic dream sometimes,
or maybe there is a true dream, or a prophetic inspiration, or an essential nature of the spiritual realities, and there is no hope sometimes, or maybe there is a breaking that cannot be mended, or a separating that cannot be united, but it will always be an inspiration and divination. |
The theme of this poem is that no matter what we do, there is an inspiration constantly surrounding us. Christopher George conveys this message when he writes how sometimes we will have no hope, but that inspiration will always be around. He uses symbolism when he writes how a dream can be symbolic.

Dear Addiction By Zeb Edington
I’m writing this to you
Telling you we're through I can’t take you anymore Don’t know what I liked you for All you did was wear me out Now I know what you're all about You came to me with promise and joy Now look at all the things you destroy Families, lives, bank accounts you see You ruined it all with one little tease Look at the way you make me feel Then you take it all and want me to steal Why can’t you just go and hide Somewhere far away where I’ll never find Everyone at home doesn’t understand How you rip me apart, then lend me a hand I keep coming back thinking inside Maybe this time I’ll make you my bride Then I sit and wonder why Why do you really want me to die Thousands and thousands come to you Hoping and praying you’ll help them through Then they fall for your lending hand Only to realize you're nothing but a scam You promised me heaven and sent me to hell You ruined my life and then wished me well Watch me now as I go on my way I’m washing myself of all of your pain So you and your power can just leave me be I’m taking my life and setting it free |
The theme of this poem is that you can find the inpiration to get rid of your addiction, but only after you're able to recognize that you don't need it no more. Zeb conveys this message because he writes from his personal experience about how his addiction ruined his life and the people around him, so he decided to now lead his life, addiction free. The whole poem is basically a personification because he's writing to his addiction.

Don't Give Up By Jeff Bresee
We wait for what we long for
We long for what we need Impatience and Anxiety Give root to errant deed Which grows to yield but heartache The fruit that poisons trust And so to shadow we recede And hope descends to dust But somehow from the ashes The will to try again Doth mend the heart And forge the path In search of that one friend Who never will betray us Who never will go astray But fear still lurks upon the thought While waiting for that day We’ll simply stumble once again For we know not who to trust Thus thoughts becomes an enemy But conquer them we must For surely there is someone Whether ‘Shining Knight’ or ‘Bride’ Then all shall have been worth it Our “Last Hope” justified |
The theme of this poem is that we should never give up because we will eventually find someone to help keep us going. Jeff conveys this message by writing about how we will one day find someone that will always be there for us. He uses a lot of personification when he writes,"the fruit that poisons trust" or "and hope descends to dust".

True Feelings By Shianne
What do you do when your world falls apart
When your secrets rip and tear at your heart? What happens when the truth becomes a lie When your own happiness you defy? What do you do when the tears don't fall When silence is the only answer to your call? How do you cope with a pain that goes so deep When all you want is to lie down and sleep? When you don't want to wake up to another day When you're afraid of what everyone will say? How do you hide yourself so no one can reach you When the lies are no longer true? What do you do when you can't bear sadness anymore When the lies fall useless to the floor? What do you do when the hurt is greater every time that you wake When it's your own life that you want to take? What happens when you can't bear the whispers you hear When it's all collaborating with your deepest fear? What do you do when you don't want the sun to rise When it's just another day to bring tears to your eyes? What do you do when you don't have answers to questions you ask When your true feelings are hidden behind a mask? When the tears fall freely and you don't try to hide Only then do you realize the happiness you defied. |
The theme of this poem is that we achieve happiness only after we realize all our doubts. Shianne conveys this message because 90% of the poem talks about our doubts, but at the end she reveals that happiness comes at the end. A poetic device used quite often is personification when she writes,"when silence is the only answer to your call" and "when the lies fall useless to the floor".
